The first thing we need to do is slow down and calm ourselves. When we become calm, we are giving that calmness not only to our mind but, in a way, to our whole body. After that, it’s important to understand something: trying not to think about someone usually doesn’t work. The mind doesn’t respond well to commands like “don’t think about this person.” Instead, we can gently give our attention to someone we truly want to focus on—ourselves. As our attention moves toward ourselves, the other person gradually occupies less space in our thoughts. Why do so many of us struggle to think about ourselves? I think one reason is the pace of modern life. We get used to postponing what matters most, including getting to know ourselves. We need to slow down, meet ourselves, make peace with ourselves, and learn to love ourselves.By “meeting yourself,” I mean becoming aware of your whole body. Many people know surprisingly little about the human body. What does the heart do? What is the brain responsible for? What do the lungs do? What do the intestines do? Even learning these simple things can help us feel more connected to ourselves. Understanding our body often makes it easier to appreciate and accept it.Because of different habits or lifestyles, we may have neglected certain parts of ourselves. Right now, take a moment to notice your body. If you feel tension, pressure, or discomfort anywhere—your hands, your feet, your shoulders, or any other area—gently bring your attention there. Thank that part of your body for carrying you this far. Then, thank your whole body for staying with you through every difficult day. And thank the part of yourself that has always been trying to protect you. But don’t make it an automatic “thank you.” Really feel it. Be fully present while doing it.When we consistently care for ourselves in this way, we begin to value ourselves more deeply. And once the person we care for the most becomes ourselves, if someone else doesn’t treat us with the same love and respect, we naturally want to move away from them rather than chase after them.@selflove
